Harpenden Lions Musical Events

Harpenden Lions has established itself locally as a presenter of varied and popular music events and as supporters of young musicians. Over the last 30 years classical concerts organised by Harpenden Lions have generated substantial sums for a wide variety of deserving charities including music related ones.

The events cover a wide range from an orchestral concert by a lake, chamber music, 60s nights and a rock music evening. The club also sponsors young musicians to enter the Lions European Musical Competition.

In 2010 the Harpenden Lions did the following:

  1. Jointly presented 'Harpenden Rocks' rock charity concert.
  2. Hosted 'Summer Classics' chamber music concert in Rothamsted Manor, Harpenden in June.
  3. Sponsored a young oboist to enter the Lions European Musical Competition.

Lions European Musical Competition 2010 / 2011

Oboe

Lions European Musical Competition is held annually for young solo musicians resident in Europe. Each year a different instrument is chosen for the three stage competition which determines the musician who will represent their county in a grand final. The 2010 / 2011 competition will feature the oboe and the final will be held in Maastricht - all expenses paid!

The competition is open to young musicians up to the age of 23. It is one of the very few competitions to provide opportunities for this age group to have access to Europe.

There are substantial prizes. Every Lions Club may sponsor one musician; Harpenden Lions Club competes in 'multiple district 105' - British Isles and Ireland.

Who can enter?

The musician the club is looking for will be an oboist of a high standard, probably a music college graduate, born after 31st December 1987 and will have been resident in the UK or Ireland for three years prior to 1st January 2011.

What's involved?

Each candidate will be required to play an 'imposed piece' plus one piece of their choice from the supplied repertoire list.

What are the stages?

The competition has three phases, each with a prize-winner:

  1. Lions District 105A finals (N. London, Beds, Herts, Bucks and Oxford)
  2. Lions Multiple District 105 finals (UK & Ireland)
  3. Lions European Final in Maastricht, Holland, in October 2011

How do I apply?

Applications should be made to Harpenden Lions Club by 1st September 2010 at the latest.

Background to the Competition

Lions European Musical Competition Logo

The competition began in 1991; the UK and Ireland Lions area (Multiple District 105) first participated in 2004. The selected instrument that year was the clarinet, and Alice Gledhill was nominated by Harpenden Lions. She won the Multiple District competition held in Bournemouth and then competed in the European final in Rome in October 2004.

Since 2004 Harpenden Lions Club has sponsored a contestant most years with varying levels of success. All expenses are paid by the sponsoring club or by Lions centrally. The club is now seeking a talented young oboist to represent the club, and hopefully the country, in 2011. It is a great opportunity to compete in an international competition with expenses paid, and generous prize money. It can be a real boost to a young musician's career in music.
