Book Shops
Members of Harpenden Lions Club sorting through the books prior to opening the 2010 charity bookshop. When a local shop becomes empty and available the club uses it to sell second hand books for fund raising. These very popular occasional book shops have become an established part of Harpenden life. The 2010 Charity Bookshop is now open in the former 'Bookstack' shop in Bowers Parade. All proceeds to Lions charities.
Steve Gledhill, Harpenden Lions Club spokesman said, "We were all saddened to see our local Harpenden bookshop close but are delighted to be able to use the former 'Bookstack' premises for our charity second-hand bookshop and we thank the landlord for the opportunity. The quality of donated books is always very high. It's an ideal opportunity to stock up on holiday reading material for a fraction of the price of new books. I also encourage everyone to search their bookshelves and bring along any unwanted items. As well as books the Lions bookshop also accepts for sale used DVDs, cassettes and vinyl records". Even when bookshops are not operating the Lions are always pleased to accept donations of books which are carefully stored until the next event. Many people who are clearing out prefer to give unwanted books to the Lions rather than throwing them away. If you have any books for clearance please e-mail info@harpenden-lions.co.uk. If you know of any local premises that are likely to be available for use as a short term bookshop please e-mail info@harpenden-lions.co.uk or telephone the Help Line 0845 833 7426. [Top] Easter Eggs In the weeks before Easter Harpenden Lions Club provides local pubs and clubs with giant Easter eggs which are raffled for charitable causes. The photograph is from the local Observer newspaper report of February 17th 2005. It shows Micky Hill, landlord of the Inn on the Green in Harpenden, along with Lions Club member Steve Gledhill. In 2005 the Little Steps learning project benefited and the organisation will again be benefiting from the Easter 2006 raffle. For more information visit the Schools Support page. [Top] Tin Shaking Every Christmas Lions are seen in Harpenden High Street collecting money for worthwhile causes. The photograph from December 2006 shows a pair of very cold Lions collecting in the High Street.
